When Should I Have my Hearing Tested? – Harford County Aegis “Ask a Doctor”

Q: My family has been complaining about my hearing recently, but I’m not
ready for hearing aids.  When should I have my hearing tested?

A: A lot of people wait until they’re ready to get hearing aids before
they have their hearing evaluated by an audiologist.  But this isn’t
ideal.  The best time to get your hearing checked out is as soon as
you start to think there might be an issue.  It doesn’t matter if
you’re ready for hearing aids or not.  While hearing loss is usually a
benign condition, it can sometimes be a symptom of more serious
medical condition.  And, in some cases, it’s a sign of a
not-so-serious condition that you don’t need to put up with.  It could
just be an ear full of wax.  Either way, with hearing evaluations
being covered by most health insurances, you really should be tested
by an audiologist as soon as you notice an issue.
