Hearing Aids and Background Noise – Harford County Aegis “Ask a Doctor”

Q: Are there hearing aids that can make background noises quieter?

A: Hearing in noisy places like a restaurant is often very difficult for
people with hearing loss.  You want to hear your spouse in front of
you and not the other 100 people in the room, right?  It would be
great if the hearing aids knew who you were married to, but technology
isn’t quite there yet.  While it’s physically impossible to make
sounds quieter (without plugging up the ears), there are some hearing
aid technologies that can really help in places like a noisy
restaurant.  Built-in directional microphones emphasize what’s in
front of you more than the sounds behind you, digital noise reduction
emphasizes speech sounds more than other sounds, and clip-on
microphones can be used to transmit the sound from the other side of
the table directly into your ears.  If you’d like to try these
technologies out for yourself, feel free to give us a call to schedule
a live demonstration.
